By BBN Staff: Guatemalan media, Agencia Guatemalteca de Noticias reported that Guatemalan President, Alejandro Giammetti has asked the Organization of American States (OAS) to facilitate a meeting with the Government of Belize.
According to the report, the meeting will be to promote interaction and good relations with Belize in order to take advantage of opportunities in trade and tourism, among others.
Giammettei said that he is proposing to the OAS to schedule the meeting for January 26 in Belmopan or in the adjacency zone.
In addition, Giammettei said that Guatemala is highly interested in having good relationships with its neighbour countries.
Giammettei said that in commenting it to the OAS officials, they ‘loved’ the idea of meeting with Belizean officials.
This week, Belizean officials confirmed that Guatemala has nominated a judge to sit at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to listen to submissions on Guatemala’s territorial, maritime and insular claim on Belize.
In May of 2019, Belizeans voted Yes in a national referendum giving a clear mandate for the Government of Belize to seek a final resolution to Guatemala’s claim at the ICJ.
