By Aaron Humes: A dispute between two scions of the United Democratic Party is in court, but it is about to be settled.
Troy Flowers, alias DJ Dalla, a promoter and entertainment producer, this week engaged attorney Kareem Musa to file in court seeking to recover as much as $26,000 from Music Ambassador and Mesopotamia UDP standard bearer Jamal “Shyne” Barrow, the bill for the consignment they agreed to use for Music Week activities last May, and a further $10,000 for “talent fees” and other ancillary damages.
As explained by Musa this morning, the men agreed that Shyne would sign for use of the consignment Flowers has with Belize Brewing Company, Limited, but failed to pay. The contract is both oral and written in terms of the signature on the consignment and Whatsapp messages exchanged.
The drinks giant sued Flowers and obtained a default judgment in court in November, and now Flowers is, in turn, suing Shyne.
But minutes before he was to file the papers in court today, Musa told reporters, “I spoke with my client and he has informed me – and I would presume that it is because of you good people, the media – that some sort of settlement is brewing and that in fact they might be taking on – and when I say “they,” it is because Mr. Barrow has approached via an intermediary to settle the matter – they will be taking on the payment as far as I am aware, that is the proposed settlement to Belize Brewing Company Limited…”
But there are other “offshoots” from the incident including Dalla losing other sponsors. The talent fee sought by Dalla, Musa said, is not only for simply appearing at an event, but for pre-preparation, advertising, logistics, and other issues, and it was agreed on by both men. It has turned out to be an expensive judgment for his client in respect of doing business in this matter, he added.
The original case comes up in February, but the agreement is for monthly installments.
And why is this news? Mostly because of the personalities involved, Musa concedes: “We are talking about a possible area representative, somebody who wants to represent the people – people want to know we are electing people of integrity and responsibility.”
