Illegal Airstrips; Here, There, Everywhere?
The illegal plane landing took place on an illegal airstrip on private property off the Coastal Road in the Belize District. It is believed that the men legally entered through the western border days before the drug plane landing. It is also believed that they may have canvassed the area to prepare the illegal landing. When Belize authorities got information of the drug plane leaving Venezuela, teams were deployed to several legal and illegal airstrips in the country. And while the drug traffickers used the airstrip for the illegal landing, holding the landowner responsible or criminally liable is a complicated matter. According to Williams, the landowner can simply say that it is not an airstrip.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
“It is a private property but there is no nexus between the owner of the property and the landing of the plane. So there is nothing we will be able to do to the owner of that property.”
“Will any destruction of the airstrip be done?”
“It is a private property. One can say that the road was created not for an airstrip and someone just used it to land a plane illegally. We have no authority by law to do and destroy their property.”
“So by law as you are saying no person can be charged or fined is a airstrip is found on their property?”
“Yes because they are not going to say that it is an airstrip.”
“How many of these airstrips are found around the country?”
“There are few. I am not going through the details.”
