By BBN Staff: The morgue at the San Ignacio Hospital is currently not functioning.
Breaking Belize News confirmed with the Ministry of Health (MOH) this morning that the morgue is currently being evaluated for the cause of the problem. Dr. Havier Zuniga, manager of the MOH’s Western Health Region, said that he expects the morgue to be up and running by the end of the day because shutdowns at that particular morgue are frequent and generally do not last long.
Chief Executive Officer in the MOH, Dr. Ramon Figueroa, who is currently out of the country, had noted last month that several of the morgues in the country are in need of renovation because of continued operational issues. The issue of morgues malfunctioning became largely publicized in March when the morgue at the Southern Regional Hospital (SRH) malfunctioned and caused a body there to decompose. The SRH morgue made the news again in April as a person had to transport his deceased relative to Belmopan because the SRH morgue was down.
Reports reaching our newsroom is that the SRH morgue is currently undergoing operational difficulties. Breaking Belize News will have more on this story in a follow-up article.
